  • Won South Africa’s FIRST gold medal in 44 years
  • As an international swimmer, Penny Heyns established herself as the world’s greatest female breaststroker of the 20th Century by becoming the only woman in Olympic history to win both the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke
  • Triple Olympic Medalist; Double Gold – Atlanta 1996, Bronze Sydney 2000
  • A total of 14 individual world records during her career; more breaststroke world records than any other swimmer in history, male or female
  • She is South Africa’s only Double Olympic Individual Gold Medalist
  • She is the only female swimmer in history to hold five (5) of the possible six (6) breaststroke world records at the same time
  • She is the only breaststroker, male or female, to hold World Records in all 3 possible distances namely 50m, 100m & 200m
  • In May 2007 she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Florida –USA
